And so it begins...

It's nice to meet you!

Welcome to my blog for the Ohio University class English 2100. On this blog, I will be posting entries regularly about the media we are reading.

Now, a little about myself: My name is Katie Pittman, and this is my final semester at Ohio University. I am double majoring in journalism and Spanish, and I am the editor-in-chief of the student-run magazine, Thread. This past summer, I lived in New York City and worked for O, The Oprah Magazine as an editorial intern. That being said, I hope to move to the city again after graduation and work for a women's lifestyle publication.

It may seem unusual for a senior to be taking an introductory-level English course, but I wanted to finish my senior year with some enjoyable courses. I've always been interested in literature and interpretation of texts (my mother is an English professor, so I get it honestly), and this course sounded like a great way to analyze and contextualize popular texts in terms of "the hero" and how he/she functions in society.

In high school, I was introduced to Joseph Campbell's The Hero of a Thousand Faces. Unfortunately, we never read the book, which I am excited to do now. In this course specifically, I find it interesting that most of the heroes we will be studying seem larger than life or supernatural, rather than "normal" people who do good deeds. I'm interested to see how one's imagination creates and glorifies these amazing heroes, while also trying to channel and emulate their characteristics.

I'm excited to go continue throughout the semester and can't wait to see what the coming weeks bring.

Until next time,
Katie

  1. Well, Katie, from the sounds of it, you're all set for this course and should add a lot to our discussions. I am always pleased when seniors (and sometimes even grad students) take my "sophomore level" classes because this helps shake up some our institutionalized notions about placement level, preparation, adequacy, and so on. So welcome to the class!
